Horus, Oil on Canvas (60 x 60), 2024. This painting features a person and a cat, both gazing intently at the viewer. With the central composition of the subject and the chiaroscuro-lighting of the scene I wanted to achieve a gripping effect. The viewer should feel as though the painting was staring knowingly into their soul.
The painting uses my recurring symbolism of the eye and the moon, here in the form of two silver rings on the hand. On the sweater of the subject, there is a faint print of the Eye of Horus (Udjat Eye), a central symbol of ancient Egyptian mythology. To me these symbolisms portray a sense of wisdom, as though the subject in the painting could see right through our masks, and see things that not even we see about ourselves.
I worked thick into thin, stylistically the painting was inspired by the magnificent brushwork of Tania Rivilis.
