Temperance I, Oil on Canvas (76 x 57), 2024. The painting features a composition of two intertwined figures, one cutting the other open with a knife. With the composition and the lighting, I wanted to achieve a harmonious effect that is somewhat broken by the white rectangle at the bottom. The impact of the painting should therefore reflect the subject, which is also something harmonious being disturbed.
At the point of making this painting I was struggling with nihilism. Being confronted with a loss of meaning made me unproductive and my tendency to procrastinate worse. I often felt like I was living each day at the cost of the next, just leaving all my problems to the me of tomorrow.
One interpretation is that this painting is a manifestation of the sense of absurdity that I felt when I was finally able to grasp this situation for what it was. It serves as a reminder to not live at the cost of tomorrow, and address todays problems head-on.
